As the culmination of a BFA journey, "Coming Out of the Coffin" is a comic book that explores the intricate tapestry of queer allegory woven throughout vampire media. This project reflects a passion for storytelling and visual art while serving as a personal exploration of identity, representation, and the complexities of desire. Vampires have long been symbols of transgression, seduction, and otherness that resonate deeply within queer experiences. From the haunting allure of Dracula to modern reinterpretations in film and literature, these characters encapsulate the struggle for acceptance and the celebration of difference. The comic delves into this rich history, tracing the evolution of vampire narratives and their embedded queer themes, highlighting how these tales have mirrored societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ identities across generations.
Through a mix of illustration and narrative, each page of "Coming Out of the Coffin" invites readers into a dialogue about the fears and joys of coming out—both literally and metaphorically. The use of vivid colors and dynamic layouts is designed to evoke the emotions tied to these experiences, drawing parallels between the vampiric and the human condition. The way the work is presented further highlights its message. The coffin-shaped bookshelf reimagines the vampire’s resting place as a visibility space, inviting people to engage with the story personally and encouraging participation and connection. This project is a celebration of resilience and transformation, illuminating the voices that have often been marginalized. The journey of those within the queer community is reflected upon to inspire a deeper understanding of how art can serve as both a mirror and a beacon. By reclaiming and reimagining the vampire narrative, "Coming Out of the Coffin" empowers readers to embrace their true selves and recognize the beauty in their unique stories.
"Coming Out of the Coffin" is a heartfelt exploration of identity and transformation through the lens of vampire stories. This project combines a comic book with a unique presentation—a life-sized bookshelf shaped like a coffin. Traditionally, coffins are linked to death and secrecy, but here they become symbols of pride, visibility, and reclaiming one’s identity.

These two posters and the sticker set go with the exhibition as supplementary materials for viewers to interact with before reading my full comic book.

These are some behind-the-scenes images that I was able to capture during my construction of the coffin and the making of the project as a whole!
